Some of my favorite women of noir:
Patricia Highsmith, Tremor of Forgery, etc.
Dorothy B. Hughes, In a Lonely Place
Helen Nielsen. Any other favorites?
(TS are flakey.)

I can highly recommend Vicki Hendricks. She's the high priestess of noir. She has several excellent novels to her credit (Miami Purity, Voluntary Madness, and Cruel Poetry to name a few) as well as a great collection of short stories called Florida Gothic Stories.

You can't go wrong with her.

There are a lot of similarities between some of the older women of noir and more recent writers. Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell have similar psycho characters and unpredictable plots; Strangers on a Train and The Bridesmaid. Mo Hayder also seems pretty dark.
