"The deceptively simple through-line for Swedish media personality and activist Liv Strömquist's The Reddest Rose is the question: Why does Leonardo DiCaprio date an endless string of 20-something models? Her answer -- in the form of this collection of well-researched, humorous comics essays -- tracks how philosophers and artists, from the Ancient Greeks to Beyoncé, conceptualized romantic love. Strömquist's signature characters, drawn in a flat, blocky style, ask each other questions and offer sharp commentary as they guide readers throughout history and the change in societies' values, from showing love/loving to getting love/being loved. Strömquist wonders: in a rationalist, consumerist world, can romantic love survive?"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |

Leaning extensively on the work of Byung-Chul Han and Eva Illouz -- I'm unfamiliar with either -- and the shallow relationships of Leonardo DiCaprio, Strömquist comes to the conclusion that love is impossible with the groupthink of our modern age where women should put their well-being ahead of suffering from bad or inadequate relationships. I don't think many readers will be happy to hear that.
The interesting and humorous moments are few and far between, leaving me bored and eager to get on to the next book on my to-read shelf, whatever that might be. ( )
