Excellent book for someone whom is already familiar with Hegel's work.

Ancient and Medieval philosophers might have said that metaphysics was, like chemistry or astrology, to be defined by its subject matter: metaphysics was the “science” that studied “being as such” or “the first causes of things” or “things that do not change”. It is no longer possible to define metaphysics that way, for two reasons.

Errol Harris was a contemporary South African philosopher. The Reality of Time (Bibliotheca Persica)
Errol E. Harris substantial and well-written essay on a key topic in metaphysics, by a distinguished and seasoned metaphysician. The writing is vigorous, concise, and clear, and the examples are aptly chosen and lucidly formulated.

The argument in this book is that scientific knowledge follows 'dialectical logic', not formal logic. An interesting starting point, but the author uses such vague language that it's difficult to make heads or tails of what he's trying to say. And some of the support he claims for his thesis in the history of science is just ludicrous. A sufficiently vague philosophy will fit any scientific fact, but that doesn't make it more convincing.
