Janette Oke (pronounced "oak") was born in Champion, Alberta, Canada, during the depression years. She graduated from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta where she met her husband, Edward. She and Edward married in 1957 and went on to serve churches in Calgary and Edmonton, Canada, and visa mer Indiana. Oke published her first book, Love Comes Softly, in 1979. The book experienced immediate success because works of fiction were a virtually unknown genre in the Christian publishing industry. Oke has gone on to publish some 36 romance novels, earning her the 1992 President's Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. She is the author of the "Love Comes Softly" and the "Prairie Legacy" series of books. Oke enjoys a large reading audience primarily comprised of teenagers, homemakers and working women. - Janette was born during the depression years to a Canadian prairie farmer and his wife, and she remembers her childhood as full of love and laughter and family love. After graduating from Mountain View Bible College in Canada where she met her husband, Edward, they pastored churches in Canada and the U.S., and they raised their family of four children, including twin boys, in both countries. Edward eventually became president of Mountain View Bible College and recently established a coalition of colleges that became Rocky Mountain Bible College.
In recent years, Janette and her siblings lovingly restored their parents' prairie farm home, and it now serves as a gift shop and museum of prairie life. Please see below for a special invitation to the Oke Writing Museum and The Steeves' Historical House. She and her husband live nearby in Alberta, Canada, where they are active in their local church. Visits from their families, including their grandchildren, are their delight.

I thought this book was very sweet! I love Missie! She showed some real depth on this journey, and I got a much better sense of who she was compared to the previous two books in the series. In this book Missie and her new husband ride West to start their new life, but for someone with such a happy home and doting parents, it's a sacrifice for her. That's what I loved about her. Throughout her journey, she had to reconcile herself to her new situation and the reality that she might never see the rest of her family again. That's heavy, and I applaud her for persevering. Some people might call her wishy-washy because she misses home one minute but is gun-ho the next, but I think that simplifies her character. Normal humans have doubts, and those pesky doubts resurface in times of stress. And she had plenty to be stressed about.
Not only does Missie have to make it through the wagon journey, she also has to get used to life on the ranch where living there isn't quite as romantic as she pictured it would be. She makes and loses friends. Her first couple years are difficult ones, and at every turn, there comes the old doubt that maybe this was a mistake and she should just go home. In spite of that, she finds ways to keep busy, learns from the past, and make a place for herself in this new world. That takes real courage.
So why am I only giving this three stars? While it was sweet, it didn't really grip me or pull at my heartstrings. There was no new romance to cheer for and no big bad to overcome. This kind of literature is more like popcorn for me. It's chill and enjoyable, but it doesn't really stick with you or really pull you into the story. If you're looking for something peaceful to read in a short span of time, I'd recommend this.… (mer)

Strike 2 for this author. If the sixth book is as bland and preachy as this, I won't be able to finish the series, which is such a shame because her Canadian West series is fantastic. I'm so disappointed that this series isn't matching that, especially since this one had so much potential!
There are two main plots in this book. The first is the rest of the family now needs to adjust to Clark's injury. The second is Marty is pregnant again, but she's having doubts. First with Clark: I ranted in my review of the fourth book that Clark never doubted his faith in frustration. He just accepted his new life. This made the story boring and, frankly, uninspirational. When their adopted daughter starts doubting her faith, she becomes angry and reserved. I would think "conflict! yes!" However, I was disappointed because her doubt was mentioned a couple of times in the beginning of the book and then not at all until one chapter near the end. She basically disappeared from the story, so the struggle didn't build. It was resolved in a very bland way.
Second, Marty's pregnancy. Marty doesn't want this child because she's older than when she gave birth to her other children, and she's concerned about her health. This is a fair concern. She lives in a rural area during a time when medicine was still very primitive. There was no prenatal care of any kind back then. Marty worries for a couple of chapters, thinking about how she doesn't want the baby, worrying about how others will perceive her, worrying about appearance when she gives birth at the same time as her daughter-in-law. Again, these are all fair concerns, and I was invested in Marty's journey to love and accept her new child. Similar to the adopted daughter's subplot, this also had a quick resolution. The first time she felt the baby kick, she fell in love with the child. That was it. To be fair, I've never been pregnant. I don't know what it would be like to carry a child. Still, I expected more inner wrestling with Marty. Perhaps she accepted the child at that moment, but then she still has reservations once the thrill goes away. Nope. She is thoroughly thrilled to have that baby and has no more qualms about it.
This book was more episodic than narrative, and that's probably why I struggled with it. I prefer to read about someone struggling to overcome some odd or achieve some goal. I want to read about characters developing, growing, overcoming obstacles. To me, watching a flawed character evolve through hardship is more inspirational than a happy-go-lucky family planting in their field and celebrating Christmas. Even when hardship does hit, it's overcome by the next chapter. This doesn't engage me. However, if you don't like grit, and this is your castle in the sky, go for it.… (mer)

This book was so frustrating! The beginning wasn't that bad. I was excited to return to Marty and Clark while reading more about Missie's budding family. So far, the books have been sweet with a dash of drama. I didn't mind the slower, calmer pace. What I do mind is unrealistic optimism.
To lose a limb is devastating, regardless of who you are. While there are people who've recovered (somewhat) and made their stories inspirational, they only succeeded after months or even years of struggling. That is completely fair. Their entire life has changed. For a farmer like Clark, losing his leg could mean the difference between life and death. He wouldn't be able to plow his fields or feed his family.
When this horrible thing happened, I settled in to read about how this inspirational family overcame this tragedy. Instead, that was solved in one page. I kid you not. Clark spends a page - one afternoon - crying and praying, and then he's fine. That's it. One afternoon of wallowing, and then he's accepted it. Not only is it unrealistic, it's just uneventful. There's no point in the rest of the book. Not only did Clark accept his new life, so did everyone else. No more conflict. No more struggle. No more story.
I guess Clark is supposed to be a Christian's fantasy: a simple yet manly man whom other men look up to who is also very spiritual. Taking this into consideration, it makes sense why Clark would get over his loss so quickly. That said, it doesn't excuse the poor storytelling. What strengthens faith is doubt. It's ironic, but it's like having day without night. You need one to really value the other. Since Clark never doubts, never struggles, neither his character nor his faith grows. This book is preachy and bland and did a disservice to the more complex character in the first Love Comes Softly book.… (mer)

As is typical of "inspirational" fiction, the main characters had only minor flaws, and their problems were quickly and easily overcome.
The last third of the book focuses on Donnigan's desire to learn who God is and how to please Him. This seemed like a separate book, or an extra-long epilogue. It's also the part that makes this a "Christian" read, I guess.
Multiple characters mention a "right" to get married or talk of "deserving" marriage. I don't believe that marriage is something a person can "deserve," but the way it was written leads me to think that the author does believe it.
Pretty standard fluff that's quick to get through. But honestly, it just wasn't interesting enough to recommend, even as a fluffy read.… (mer)
